I saw it fit to make up for my time lost from the long weekend and ride in order to get some new stories to entertain you and as well to work my first football game.
Friday wake up around noon and eat some breakfast only to think to myself that in about 2 hours I am about to start pedaling for the next 12 hours... yes 12 hours. Finish my breakfast and check the weather 93 degrees 103 heat index... perfect. Load up with plenty of water my goofy soccer hat, several extra shirts and some sunglasses, I get on the road about 2pm to start riding the around the stadium to pick up all the tailgating UT fans. It's 3miles from the shop to the stadium and up hill once you head north from 5th and not a set of climbs with a 200lb sled, the area directly south has some rollers but for the most part is about 15 block area that I am riding around.
As am headed toward the stadium up the hill on trinity I get hailed for my first ride two guys with a case in each hand ready to join the festivities... they hop in and here we go... and we're off.. and shit, chains jammed. Sorry guys hop out looks like you are walking. After several minutes of some road side repair I am not greasy and 5lbs lighter from baking in the sun. With new an improved bike I start the tour of the area and get hailed down again for a ride from a couple, the husband ask if I can take them back to 6th street, Sure no problem then the wife says, "actually we are going to Lamar and 6th... well its past that is that okay?" My head says NO, but I say sure, no problem. I began the long trek exactly where I came from, in fact they parked across the street from the shop that I have have come from 3 miles earlier. 6 miles later after dropping them off and coming back, this is not the way I want to start my day its too hot. Its not about 3pm and kick off is 6pm so I spend the rest of the time make gopher rides around the stadium and back south to 6th and beyond. I must have tackled trinity hill 15 times did I mentioned I was sweating my ass off.
Kick off initiates my brake and it's time to refuel with some Jimmy Johns and the best sandwich ever the Gargantuan and a combo I'm ready for the night again after 2000 calories and a clean shirt lets ride...
I start back just before 630 and hit the hotels for some Dinner business and get back in the groove. Waiting on the football crowd and the fun to resume. 8hrs into my night the football game is over and here comes the fun... As we are waiting for the Que line for stadium pickup a DJ played two of the greatest songs ever that spurred a cabbie brake dance battle. Planet Rock and Freestyle... WINNER
I pick up a mom and her daughter and we attempt to exit with 100,000 people going at the same time. As I'm weaving through the crowd I see an elderly man and he has a bug on his back to I attempt to flick it off (several attempts) successfully making contact with the bug he recognizes that I am in his personal space and yells, "what are you doing?" i apologize and say sorry you had a bug on you it must of been a Wyoming fan... as I make eye contact with him and realize that he is wearing a Wyoming shirt... oops
Now my favorite part of the night, this turns into a double story. Pick up married couple from the game and they want to head back to the Hotel across the river and ask to take the back way...(foreshadow). I start talking to them, they are visiting for there sons official visit of UT and they wanted to tag along. I see the husband reach into his pocket and grab what looked like a cigarette and lighter and hear the him try to light up unsuccessfully so after many attempts I hear him take a drag a long long long drag... Then the wife has a go and I hear the inhale and the cough alot... You've got to be kidding me I don't want to look back and see this. So, I just pedal faster to get them to the hotel. As I pull up the husband ask why I'm in such a rush. As he ask he is cut of by his wife,"shit our son" I just dropped off two high parents to their kid who is about to attend college... NICE. As they reluctantly hop out of the cab and ask what he is doing outside on his own I see the husband stuff his hands back in his pockets. As I sit there and regroup two girls out front ask how my night is going. So long story short they are sisters visiting from San Francisco trying to find a place to live in Austin. One of them ask if driving a ca is hard and if she can drive. Well.. we're not suppose to let others operate the cab... as I'm cut off what are you a wuss, you think two girls are going to steal your cab? fair enough so in the back I go the other sister hops in and the brave one takes to the saddle. We hit a spin around the block and reality sets in that she is for more then she can handle, and barely make it back. Enter Debra the night security guard... "WHAT ARE Y"ALL DOING, DID YOUR STEAL THIS!" This is my cab I was taking a break, OH OKAY HAVE A GOOD NIGHT.
